As my book The Champagne CEO reaches its one-year anniversary since publication, it offers a natural moment to reflect on what leadership really requires. The book centers on three leadership themes: courage, confidence, and collaboration. One year in, those same principles continue to enable leaders to grow, adapt, and rise in environments that are constantly shifting.
For leaders aiming to reach the next level, know that success is almost never a straight line. Success emerges through decisions made in uncertainty, challenges that test your resilience, and the relationships you build. The journey may look different for everyone, but the foundation remains the same.
These same principles can help as you shift roles as well. They have guided me through my own situation as I moved from being a five-time CEO to the entrepreneur I am today. Leadership calls for courage when facing uncertainty and for hard work to make sure everything comes together.
Courage in the Face of Uncertainty
At some point, every leader is required to step forward without having full clarity. Whether it’s taking on a new role, making a high-stakes decision, or building something from the ground up, you’ll need to move forward. In entrepreneur roles, you need to be prepared to push through hard times, learn to adapt, and find solutions to obstacles often on your own.
The leaders who rise are the ones willing to push through difficult seasons and continue showing up to get the results they desire. Courage comes into play in everyday moments. It might be speaking up, taking ownership, or pursuing an opportunity that feels just out of reach. Over time, these small decisions shape a leader’s path and their level of success.
Confidence That Creates Momentum
If courage is what moves you forward, confidence is what keeps you there. Confidence is often misunderstood as certainty, but it is really built through action. The leaders who wait until they’re “ready” won’t gain the confidence they need to sustain success. The ones who sustain success and generate momentum step into challenges and learn as they go.
A key reflection for me over this past year is the importance of leaders trusting themselves and the teams they create. Strong leadership is about believing in your ability to navigate what comes next. Leaders who are willing to ask for opportunities, for growth, and for clarity often move forward faster than those who hesitate.
Collaboration That Multiplies Impact
At its core, collaboration begins with listening. For me, gathering input from everyone around me has brought invaluable perspectives and has shaped my leadership approach as an advisor in many new businesses. Leaders who actively seek out perspectives from their teams, peers, and partners are better equipped to make informed decisions. I continue to make it a priority to connect with people, whether it’s a lunch or an informal meeting, because those relationships often lead to future opportunities and deeper collaborations.
